The struggle for a healthy, balance diet is an everyday battle, which we usually lose when we pass by a donut shop (or I do). Having to watch out for what you eat, how many times a day you eat, how many calories and not giving into temptation every time you see a candy bay is gold medal deserving and requires a lot of discipline and self control.
A balance diet is exactly what the name suggests: balancing proper nutrition into your diet and not over over eating any of the food groups. This means eating fruit, fresh vegetables, whole grains, nuts and protein every day. Also, removing empty calories from your meals, like sweets, sugary drinks and junk food.
It may look easy on paper, but once your taste pallet has been used to a certain kind of diet, it may be quite a challenge to eat a salad instead of a burger for lunch. The good news is you can trick your taste buds into liking new things.
Taste buds change throughout your lifetime
Remember when you were a kid and hated the sight of vegetables on your plate? You don’t have the same aversion now, you even love broccoli, right? So what has changed? Your tastebuds and they will continue to do so.
Adults have somewhere in between 2.000 and 10.000 taste buds. The more you have the more complex your flavor tasting is, and the more you enjoy food. And the best part is you can teach them to like certain foods, which can be the best way to change your diet.
The trick is to mix flavors you love with foods you don’t really like. You can add sugar or salt, cheese or meat or any kind of seasoning and start experimenting with food so that you don’t always eat the way you were used to. This way you can add so many things to your diet.
It’s not just a matter of like or dislike, it’s a matter of habit. Just like any action becomes a habit if you do it for 30 days, certain foods can become more appealing if you add them to you daily meals and, soon, your diet can change for the better.
Want to eat more vegetables? Start with one more a day and gradually grow the amount. More fruit? Try a fruit salad with maple syrup,, instead of the usual dessert, and everyday use a little less. Trick your mind and your taste buds into liking something new!
